A Family Spouse visa is a document that allows you to live with your spouse / partner for 30 months in the United Kingdom with a right to work there.
After 30 months of stay, a Spouse visa can be extended for other 30 months Spouse visa extension
After that, it is possible to apply for permanent residence in the UK (Indefinite Leave to Remain), and finally go through a naturalisation process (obtain the British Citizenship).

Who can apply for a Spouse visa?
- Applicants over 18 years of age
- Applicants who are married to a UK citizen / a legal resident of the UK
- Applicants who are planning to marry in the UK on a Fiance Visa
The processing time for a Spouse visa is 24 weeks (6 months).
Priority Visa Service is temporarily not available for applicants applying from the Russian Federation.
General requirements:
Before applying for a Spouse visa, an applicant must check whether he and his sponsor meet the basic Home Office requirements listed below.
To apply for a Spouse visa an applicant needs:
– Have and be able to provide the basic documents (please refer to the Documents section below on this page)
– Prove that the relationship between an applicant and a sponsor is genuine (Genuine Relationship Test)
– Prove a minimum income level (£29 000 per year), in accordance with the Home Office financial requirements
– Prove that an applicant meets the English language requirements (see below)
– Prove that a sponsor and an applicant meet the Home Office accommodation requirement
– Submit biometrics at the Visa Application Center
– Submit a negative TB test certificate (see below)
What is the Genuine Relationship Test?
An applicant for a Spouse visa must prove the relationship between him and his sponsor (an applicant’s official spouse – a citizen or a legal resident of the UK) is genuine. The following documents may help to prove that the relationship is genuine:
– Evidence of shared bank accounts / shared financial responsibilities, such as a joint tenancy agreement or mortgage
– Birth certificates of children an applicant and a sponsor have had together (both parents must be listed)
– Photographs of the couple (an applicant and a sponsor), showing them spending time together, or with their relatives, friends; photographs of any significant events for the couple (wedding, birth of children, etc.)
– Cover letters from parents/friends confirming the relationship bettwen a sponsor and an applicant is genuine
– Screenshots of any personal correspondence between an applicant and a sponsor in social networks, confirming the nature of the relationship
– Scans of visas, confirmation bookings of accommodation and air tickets to prove an applicant and a sponsor travelled together
– Evidence of gifts or other goods bought for one another or for joint use (receipts)
– Any other documents confirming the intention of an applicant and a sponsor to live together in the UK
Unmarried Partner
If an applicant and his sponsor are in a civil partnership (not officially registered) and have been living together for the past two years, the applicant is also eligible for a family visa to the UK. In this case, the same financial and other requirements listed on this page will apply to an applicant and his sponsor. However, they will need to additionally prove the fact of living together as civil partners over the past two years.
Financial Requirements
An applicant’s sponsor must prove his annual income is at least £29 000 before tax (gross annual income). For each dependent child applying with an applicant, this increases to £2,400.
This income can come from:
– official employment in the UK
– self-employment (including directors of Limited Liability Companies) in the UK
– savings (£62 500)
– pension and benefits:

Attendance Allowance
Carer’s Allowance
Personal Independence Payment
Armed Forces Independence Payment or Guaranteed Income Payment under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme

– Income from stocks, shares and property rentals
Some sources of income can be combined together to meet the Home Office financial requirements for a spouse visa.

Knowledge of English (English Exam Test)
To be eligible to join their partners in the UK, applicants for a spouse visa must prove their ability to speak English at least at A1 level. In most cases, an applicant must pass an English language test and provide a certificate to prove his level. Those who studied in the UK at colleges or universities, can provide a diploma to prove a degree taught in English (a diploma must have a confirmation from UK NARIC).
The English test must be done through a registered provider – called a Secure English Language Testing (SELT) provider.

Tuberculosis test
Applicants from certain countries (see the link below) must provide a negative TB test result.

VISA APPLICATION PROCESS
- An applicant and this sponsor collect their documents according to the list below. We check them and provide our feedback.
- We fill in a visa application form in English.
- We upload applicant and sponsor's documents to the applicant's personal account on the TLS portal.
- An applicant submits biometrics at the Visa Application Centre.

In brief history:
We applied for a visa on 25.04 (biometrics) from Riga
I left my passport in my hands
I received a letter confirming the visa on 11.10 (the decision was made on 4.10)
Because of the illness of my husband's parents, I decided to fly to him for a month, and it was decided that if we got a visa, I would send the passport from England.
We contacted some transportation companies, they refused to take the passport. Royal Mail accepted the parcel, but at German customs my passport was detained for lack of declaration. It took six weeks for the letter to travel back.
Then I sent it by DHL, but customs again asked for a TLS Contact tax number, which I could not provide. The letter went back to me for another 2 weeks.
Anyway, I flew to Berlin, and as an exception, I had my visa pasted in 2 hours. I received my passport the same day.
I'm flying to England tomorrow, back home.
